iPAQ 38xx series Windows Mobile 2003

iPAQ 38xx series Windows Mobile 2003

Requirements
: iPAQ 38xx Series

Overview : Upgrades windows mobile 2002 to 2003. This software is intended for iPAQ 3870. the 3870 is only different in that the other 38xx series did not have a bluetooth device. I have successfully installed this on a non-bluetooth 3850 and it works completely fine, all it does is have a little icon on the bottom-right hand corner with a bluetooth symbol with an smaller X over it, meaning bluetooth is disabled.

Installation Instructions :
Please follow the instructions EXACTLY, and if you are confused, then just dont do it man.
You will need these 2 files:
the ROM: http://blog.crowe.co.nz/attachments/nk.nb0.zip
UltraEdit: http://rapidshare.com/files/4986784/UltraEdit-32_11.00b.rar

Installation Instructions:
1) extract the contents of "nk.nb0.zip" to your desktop (in its own folder)
2) re-name the file "nk.nb0.bak" to "nk.nb0"
3) Install ultraEdit, and run it.
4) open the file nk.nb0
5) press CTRL+G to go to a specific area in the file and type "0x01ff000a" (without quotation marks!) and press enter.
6) You will see a few numbers/letters on the right hand side (e.g. 4.G.1.C.D.W.3.3.W.0.H.G). This is a SERIAL NUMBER. change the serial number to YOUR serial number located on the back of your iPAQ.
7) you must do this again in another area, so press CTRL+G again, and type "0x01ff0e0a" (without quotation marks) and press enter.
8 ) do the same as step 6.
9) Save the file and exit UltraEdit.
That is the hard bit over. Now to install the fookin thing.
1) First of all you MUST close ActiveSync, so go ahead and press CTRL+ALT+DEL, click the processes tab, and end the program WCESCOMM.EXE by clicking once on the file name, and clicking the "End Task" button.
2) You need to put your iPAQ in "USB Update Mode". So, Hold softkey 2, 4 and the power button together, and while holding them, press the tiny reset button that you normall press to do a soft-reset, and hold them there until your screen says "REMOTE USB UPDATE", then let go of the buttons. (see picture below)

3) put your iPAQ into the cradle, windows will find a synchronisation device.
4) run the file "HOST11.EXE" located in the folder with the file "nk.nb0"
5) it should start updating, will take around 5 minutes.
6) Once updated, you need to do a hard reset by pressing buttons 1 and 4, and pressing the soft-reset button, and holding them ALL for around 10-20 seconds.
7) turn on your iPAQ, first-time power-on will take a couple of minutes maybe so dont worry.
Thats it! updated to Windows Mobile 2003.

Edit: To get rid of the bluetooth option (if you dont have bluetooth) just go to "\windows\startup" on your PPC and delete the file "BTTrayCE.lnk" (or move it somewhere else if you like ) and do a soft reset (switch-off wont work).

Warning: Please do not do this if you do not understand, feel free to ask any questions, but remember, ALWAYS do a backup, and that the machine belongs to YOU, not me.
